Al Reid Jr. is an American saxophonist, composer, producer, and performer whose rich, expressive tone and electrifying energy captivate audiences. Whether delivering fiery solos or smooth, melodic lines, Al’s music transcends genres, seamlessly blending jazz, R&B, funk, rock, and beyond.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Al was immersed in music from an early age, guided by his father, Al Reid Sr., a beloved trumpeter in the city’s jazz scene. His journey began at six years old on the xylophone before transitioning to clarinet and later saxophone—an instrument that would become his voice. Educated in both the Philadelphia public and Archdiocesan school systems, he attended West Philadelphia Catholic High School, studying under esteemed cellist Dr. Steven Framil and woodwind specialist Mr. William Douglas. Today, Al performs on alto, tenor, baritone, and soprano saxophones, showcasing his versatility across multiple genres.
At 14, Al picked up the saxophone, and by 15, he was already performing professionally alongside his father in the Coast 2 Coast Band and other local groups. These formative years shaped not just his musicianship but also his ability to command a stage—combining showmanship, movement, and soulful improvisation to create an unforgettable live experience.
Al deepened his studies at the Clef Club of Philadelphia, where he trained under renowned saxophonists Louis Taylor, Lovett Hines, Terrance Brown, Robert Landham, and Clinton Washington. Over the years, he has performed nationally and internationally, tackling a wide range of styles, including jazz, R&B, funk, gospel, Motown, Latin, rock, and heavy metal. His expertise extends beyond performance into musical direction, arranging, choreography, talent development, show production, sound production, and booking.
In 2017, Al released his debut album, Lost Time, followed by The Middleweight Champ in 2019. His signature sound—often compared to the legendary Grover Washington Jr.—is defined by his warm, expressive tone and infectious energy. This passion was first ignited by his uncle, Tyrone Williams, who introduced him to the saxophone. Other key influences include:
Michael Brecker
Jay Beckenstein
Gerald Albright
John Coltrane
Bob Mintzer
Bobby Watson
In 2020, following the passing of his father, Al took over leadership of Coast 2 Coast Band Philly, continuing its legacy while expanding his own creative vision. His latest project, Al Reid Jr. and Unfinished Business, brings together seasoned musicians to deliver high-energy performances across multiple styles, delivering an unforgettable experience!
Now, as he continues pushing his musical boundaries, Al is ready to bring his dynamic sound to all audiences—wherever the music calls.
